Here are some of my favorite books on Acadia National Park that have a wealth of information for visiting, hiking, and photographing the area:
Hiking Acadia National Park 2nd Edition (A Falcon Guide), Dolores Kong and Dan Ring (2012), Globe Pequot Press. A great book with descriptions, maps, and loop suggestions for all of the official hiking trails in Acadia National Park, including Isle au Haut and Schoodic Peninsula. This version of the book also includes the newer names of the trails that have been renamed by NPS since 2011. |

Map Adventures Acadia National Park Trail Map This is the definitive topographic map for Acadia National Park and is a wonderful resource for finding your way around Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island! It includes up-to-date trail names, mileage for sections of trail, peak names and elevations, and carriage road intersection post numbers. GET THIS MAP! My only wish is that it would have included the UTM grid to match the grid on the old USGS topo maps, but that shouldn't bother most people. |

National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map for Acadia National Park. This is also a good map, but it doesn't include all of the extra detailed information that the Map Adventures map does. Also, some sections of trails are slightly off or are missing. This map does include the UTM NAD27 grid that matches the old USGS topo maps for easy use with a GPS, so while not perfect, this is still a good resource. |

Best Easy Day Hikes Acadia National Park 2nd Edition (A Falcon Guide), Dolores Kong and Dan Ring (2011), Globe Pequot Press. A smaller, almost pocketable book that covers several of the easier and shorter hikes in Acadia National Park. The trails covered all have easy access and include the best scenery in Acadia. This is a great resource for those looking for only non-strenuous and family-friendly options. |
Acadia: The Complete Guide 3nd Edition, James Kaiser (2010), Destination Press. A terrific general guide book written by somebody who really knows the area. This book isn't just about hiking; it includes a lot info on other activities like kayaking, boat trips, and wildlife watching as well as history, weather/seasons, the towns on Mt. Desert Island. The book is packed with great color photos. |
The Photographer's Guide to Acadia National Park Jerry and Marcy Monkman (2010), The Countryman Press. While perhaps lacking some of the detail of the Falcon Hiking Guide and Kaiser's Complete Guide, this book has a good collection of photographs and location information to inspire hikers and photographers alike. Many of the smaller islands and less-visited locales are mentioned. |
Carriage Roads of Acadia: A Pocket Guide Diane Abrell (1985, 2011), Down East Books. A wonderful little book that helps bikers, hikers, and horseback riders alike to navigate the beautiful and complex Acadia carriage road system. Several loops are suggested to break down the roads into navigable and enjoyable chunks. This is a wonderful resource if you are planning on biking the carriage roads! |
Acadia's Carriage Roads Robert A. Thayer (2002), Down East Books. A smaller book that covers the carriage roads and focuses on construction of the roads and the amazing bridges. This book includes many statistics, interesting trivia about construction, and diagrams of the more interesting bridges. A fun and interesting read! |
