Parunuweap Canyon Boulder Obstacle

The infamous boulder obstacle in the Barracks section of the East Fork of the Virgin River is a notable landmark for hikers trying to make their way through the canyon. What was once a minor obstacle many years ago is now a significant hinderance.

The boulder obstacle in 2009 with a massive logjam directing all of the water to one side behind the boulder. You can still scramble down the boulder, but a lot of sand has washed away and the pool is front is now a swimmer. Purchase a print of this photo!

The boulder obstacle in 2019. A lot of debris has solidified behind the boulder making water now flow over the front of the boulder. The hikers' bypass is now recommended. Purchase a print of this photo!

And the obstacle in 2023. Not much has changed in the past several years; I wouldn't want to have to climb up or down this waterfall. Purchase a print of this photo!
