The dark section of the Barracks - very reminiscent of the main Zion Narrows...

A tranquil bend in the canyon just before we leave the river.

The almost famous Powell Plaque. Such a fascinating memorial: a plaque mounted on a discreet wall
hidden in shrubs, located in a seldom-traveled canyon.

The Checkerboard Mesa Escape Route: Since lower Parunuweap Canyon (within park boundaries) is off-limits to hiking as a "Nature Research Area", the exit route is a poorly marked scramble and climb up and out of the river. Within moments we are almost 1000 feet above the river.

Four more miles of hiking up the crests of slickrock to find our exit. The GPS and topo maps were invaluable
and so was every extra minute of remaining sunlight.

Looking down the final stretch from the saddle of Checkerboard Mesa canyon.
